Artists Scan Bust of Nefertiti and Release the Data for Free Online

There is a tremendous amount of interest in Nefertiti, who died in the 14th Century B.C., and was known as the Ruler of the Nile Nefertitiand Daughter of Gods. She was an Egyptian queen and the Great Royal Wife of Akhenaten, an Egyptian Pharaoh.

Nefertiti and her husband were known for a religious revolution, in which they worshiped one god only, Aten, or the sun disc. She is also thought thought to be Tutankhamun‘s stepmother.

Nefertiti is well known for her elegant beauty. Her image, and bust have been an icon for many women and for many modern cosmetic lines.

This past October, a pair of artists, Al-Badri and Nelles, secretly scanned the head of Queen Nefertiti at the Neues Museum in Berlin without permission of the Museum. (more…)

Australian rock art may be among the oldest in the world

Scientists at the University of Melbourne are dating Aboriginal rock art in Western Australia that may prove to be up to 50,000 years old.

Australian Indigenous art is the oldest unbroken tradition of art in the world. The oldest firmly dated rock art painting in Australia is a charcoal drawing on a rock fragment found during the excavation of the Narwala Gabarnmang rock shelter in south-western Arnhem Land in the Northern Territory. Dated at 28,000 years, it is one of the oldest known pieces of rock art on Earth with a confirmed date.

These ancient rocks were found in the Kimberley region of north-western Australia is home to one of the oldest, largest and most varied collections of art in the world. A quirk of geology and climate has preserved tens of thousands of rock artworks that were produced over tens of thousands of years. (more…)
