New Years Beliefs and Superstitions

The early celebration of the Jewish New Year festivals became one of the fundamental News years in washingtonfeatures of modern civilization.

New Year’s day was one of ill omen to the ancient Egyptians.

The Chinese believe a Buddhist priest to be the first to enter a house on New Year’s morning is even worse than to have a woman first enter it .

The Russians, Greeks, and other people who are under the rule of the Czar begin their year on January 13.

The Druids were accustomed on certain days to cut the sacred misletoe with a golden knife, in a forest dedicated to the gods, and to distribute its branches with much ceremony as new year’s gifts among the people. (more…)

January was dedicated to the God Janus

Sir Godfrey Higgins had written about the Roman God of New Years, Janus in Anacalypsis an Attempt to Draw Aside the Veil of the Saitic Isis – Volume 1, ” Janus was not one of what they called their twelve great Gods, but he was said to be the father of them all. He had twelve altars erected to him. He held in one hand letters denoting 365, and in the other the keys of heaven, which he opened to the good and shut to the wicked.

From time immemorial, the ancient festival that we know of today as Christmas was celebrated by many different cultures all around the world. As time moved forward and as we see in our modern era, the celebration and exchanging of gifts have become the focal point of these yearly festivities for most people, but the original meaning at the true heart of this holy-day has been lost.
